On October 28th, Cummins officially released the S29 mining engine in Chongqing. S29 is produced by Chongqing Cummins and supplied globally, with plans to enter the global market starting from mid-2027.
Cummins is headquartered in the United States and includes five business segments - engines, components, distribution, power systems, and Cummins Accelerator. The engine division is Cummins' earliest and core business.
Cummins Industrial Market China General Manager Gao Xiaofeng stated in an interview with the Economic Observer and other media that (S29) is not only aimed at Chinese OEMs, but also includes global OEMs. It is equivalent to relying on China's technological strength to create a global engine for customers around the world. ”
In China, Cummins has a history of over 40 years of localized production, and has established six engine joint ventures with Chinese companies including Dongfeng Motor, Chongqing Electromechanical, Shaanxi Automobile Group, Beiqi Foton, Liugong Group, and Jianghuai Automobile. In the first half of this year, Chongqing Cummins launched the delivery of the domestically localized version of QSK60, which is also a high-power engine.
Wang Tao, the Chief Engineer of Cummins Power Systems Division in China, told the Economic Observer and other media that the "localization" of QSK60 mainly refers to local production in China, relying on China's high-quality supply chain and manufacturing capabilities, but there have been no major changes in engine design. S29 is completely different. Starting from the earliest planning and conceptual design, it was basically led by a Chinese team and benchmarked against the international market.
According to official information, S29 is a brand new 29 liter engine platform developed from scratch, specifically designed for mining dump trucks ranging from 100 to 120 tons and excavators ranging from 150 to 220 tons. It can also be widely used in mining and industrial equipment such as open-pit mining machines, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and drainage pumps.
Wang Tao stated that S29 is developed in China with the goal of 100% localization. Each engine has thousands of parts, some of which are weak points. Over the past two years, Cummins engineering and quality control personnel have spent more than 30% of their time on the supplier side during product development, working together with suppliers to develop components from scratch and ensure that they meet high-quality and high-performance requirements.
Localization is not a matter of daring to try, but rather ensuring project success through comprehensive evaluation. Some domestic suppliers still need to carry out product development and validation, which may take two to three years. Therefore, some projects will be promoted in stages: first using products from foreign suppliers, and then gradually replacing them after domestic product development and validation, "Yuan Jun, General Manager of Cummins Power Systems Division China, told the Economic Observer and other media.
S29 is aimed at the global mining market, and its technical parameters point to several indicators that mining customers are most concerned about: the maximum output power of S29 can reach 1300 horsepower (2100 revolutions per minute, intermittent power; the final parameters are subject to verification and certification results); According to the current development goals, the minimum effective fuel consumption rate under specific operating conditions is expected to be as low as 180 grams per kilowatt hour; At the time of listing, the plan is to meet the third stage emission certification requirements for non road mobile machinery in China and achieve emission levels equivalent to the US EPA Tier 2.
Gao Xiaofeng stated that Indonesia has small and medium-sized non-ferrous metal mines, while developing countries such as Africa and Southeast Asia have a large number of small and medium-sized mines. Chinese mining companies' overseas acquisitions of mines have driven the demand for such equipment. This level of truck is also available in medium-sized mines in China and in cement before, and some of them are used to transfer to electrification, but special environments such as Xinjiang and Xizang still need oil.
Wang Tao said that for Chinese automakers, S29 provides a new opportunity. In the past, the global mining market was mainly led by Caterpillar and Komatsu, and Chinese automakers were later followers. It is necessary to refer to their vehicle design and engine selection, which has some limitations for Chinese automakers to compete globally. S29 provides Chinese automakers with the opportunity to stand on the same starting line as global mining giants, and XCMG and Sany are the earliest partners to apply Cummins engines, which to some extent gives them a first mover advantage.
In the equipment manufacturing industry, on one hand, new energy sources such as electrification and hydrogen energy are gradually being promoted, and on the other hand, mining, power generation, oil and gas and other scenarios continue to require high-power internal combustion engines.
Wang Tao stated that S29 will be suitable for various fuels in the future, with biodiesel being the main application scenario. It is more commonly used in Southeast Asia, and different application scenarios such as natural gas, methanol, and ammonia hydrogen will be considered in the future, depending on whether market demand is sufficient to support it.
According to official information, S29 is planned to be compatible with diesel, pure paraffin based fuels that comply with EN 15940 standards (such as hydrogenated vegetable oil HVO), and B50 biodiesel blends when launched. The platform will also reserve expansion space for future use of natural gas, hydrogen fuel, or dual fuel configurations.
