Economic Observation Network According to CCTV News, Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stefan Krayevski announced on the 11th that Poland has officially filed a lawsuit with the European Court of Justice regarding the EU Southern Common Market (Mercosur) Free Trade Agreement.
Krayevski said on social media that Poland is the only EU member state to file a lawsuit against the EU Mercosur Free Trade Agreement with the European Court of Justice. He stated that ensuring the safety of Polish farmers and consumers is of utmost importance to the Polish government.
On May 6th, the Polish government passed a proposal to file a lawsuit with the European Court of Justice regarding the EU Mercosur Free Trade Agreement.
The EU Mercosur Free Trade Agreement came into temporary effect on May 1st, but the European Court of Justice has not yet made a ruling on its legality. According to a statement from the European Commission, the EU Mercosur Free Trade Agreement will gradually eliminate the import tariffs imposed by Mercosur on over 91% of EU exports and open up a common market with a population of over 700 million.
On January 17th of this year, the European Union and the Southern Common Market officially signed a free trade agreement in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. The agreement needs to be approved by the parliaments of each country before it can come into effect, and Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay have already ratified it. But this agreement has caused divisions within Europe, with countries such as Poland and France leading opposition due to concerns about their own farmers' interests being harmed.
