The South African National Nuclear Regulatory Authority stated that three incidents occurred on June 30th, July 2nd, and July 7th, all during maintenance operations at Unit 2 of the Kubekh Nuclear Power Plant. Due to a power outage during maintenance of the ventilation system, the radioactive level in the air inside the power station briefly increased. After the incident, the nuclear power plant immediately activated emergency procedures to isolate and control the affected area, and the pollution did not spread to other areas.

The South African National Nuclear Regulatory Authority stated that a comprehensive examination of potentially affected personnel showed that the radiation dose received was lower than the radiation level produced by a dental X-ray examination. The department stated that the accident did not meet the standards for nuclear accidents, radiation accidents, or emergency situations in the international nuclear event classification, and there is no indication that it will have an impact on public health and environmental safety.

According to the official website of the South African National Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the Kubekh Nuclear Power Plant is located on the west coast of South Africa, about 27 kilometers from Cape Town. The nuclear power plant was completed and put into operation in the 1980s, with a total installed capacity of 1854 megawatts for the two units. Unit 2 of the nuclear power plant ceased operation in April this year for routine safety inspections and maintenance, and is expected to resume operation in late September.
