In memory of the victims, Zheng Liwen fired the first shot in retaliation against the Democratic Progressive Party's public opinion hegemony
The Taiwan Political Victims Mutual Aid Association (hereinafter referred to as the Mutual Aid Association) was established in 1987 with a political demand for national reunification. It is regarded as a pro unification organization, and therefore the Democratic Progressive Party and "Taiwan independence" forces do not participate in the memorial service; The mutual aid association mourns the political victims of the Kuomintang's rule, so the high-level officials of the Kuomintang also avoid it. In the autumn of 1991, the mutual aid association held a memorial service in Machamachi to honor the victims of the White Terror, and it has been held annually since then. This year's memorial service was held on November 8th, and two phenomena shocked both sides of the Taiwan Strait: firstly, the memorial service displayed portraits of the victims. Secondly, the newly appointed chairman of the Kuomintang, Zheng Liwen, attended the memorial service. She laid wreaths and bowed three times to the victims, with the third bowing deeply, over 90 degrees, and for a long time. There are also different opinions within the Kuomintang regarding Zheng Liwen's move, while the DPP authorities are labeling Zheng Liwen with a red hat. This is the first shot fired in counterattacking the DPP's public opinion hegemony, following the direction of historical trends, and of great significance.
